Home automation: a smart way to live the house!

The word “home automation” means “the study of home technology“.  The word ‘domo’ means ‘home’ in Japanese, German and French speaking countries, while  ‘domne’ is the Danish word for the same concept.  In Greek, the word for home is ‘dominos’. Some people think that the word “home automation” is more apt since it describes the science of directing things rather than just controlling them with technology. Home automation is increasingly widespread in particular in metropolitan areas, where time is increasingly limited; In fact, with the control of the use of electronic devices to control the functions of a home, all those repetitive activities are made more usable. Home automation automates the functionality of many devices saving time and energy.

The most popular form of home automation is smartphone apps that control lighting, temperature, security and music.  Other common home automation applications include video surveillance, shutters and switches for controlling household appliances.

For example, you can schedule smart bulbs to turn on at specific times of the day or week.  You can also configure smart switches and appliances to start or turn off even at specific times.   You can also use the Smart Home System to  monitor your home when you are out and set up a feature to be alerted if there is a problem.
The term “home automation” was coined in 1966 by Donald Norman with his book Human Use of Mechanical Electronics: Proceedings of the 1966 IEEE Symposium. The first fully automated home was completed in 1968 in Highland Park Village by Robert Swingle Jr., Bertie Stephens and Swingle Construction Company.  Since then, the field of home automation has become popular among both consumers and developers.  There are many associated technologies such as 3D printing, IoT, and blockchain that have recently gained popularity.
According to research conducted by Google in 2017, 91% of American homes now have internet connectivity at home compared to only 31% in 2012. All home automation devices are controlled via smartphone or web browser.  This connectivity allows users to control their smart home systems from anywhere with an internet connection, thus eliminating geographical restrictions.
Many people think that home automation is only useful for wealthy homeowners with large homes or commercial properties with expensive equipment such as HVAC systems or security cameras.  However, this couldn’t be further from the truth!  Anyone can install a smart system in their homes without any expensive equipment!   All you need is a smartphone (with a compatible App) and some basic tools to get you started!
Home automation is an exciting new trend that is revolutionizing the way we live our daily lives, making our homes more comfortable and affordable!  The applications are limitless; from controlling lights to temperature regulation, you can use your smart system to make your home more welcoming and energy efficient!

Home automation systems can be managed via wireless or wired connection to a smartphone or computer.  All devices are controlled via mobile apps or web browsers.  The most popular types of home automation systems are Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings, Google Nest, Amazon Alexa and Microsoft Cortana.  All home automation devices are controlled via smartphone or web browser.

The most common home automation systems are Smart Home, Smart Lighting and Smart Energy.
